Garage Door Paint – Is It Possible? 

Most overhead garage doors can be painted but you need to consider the door material before you get started. The job is relatively easy with wood, fiberglass and metal doors. Until starting you will need to clean the door thoroughly and remove any grease, dirt or chipped paint. Then you'll have to choose a paint made specifically for the material on the frame.  

Paints are designed to stick to other materials, and if you pick the wrong color, your time and energy may be wasted to refurbish your garage door. In certain cases, you can end up with a flaking or peeling screen, or a finish that just won't "stick" to the surface. Vinyl doors, for example, typically require a different form of paint made only for plastics. If you decide to take a shortcut and use a paint made for wood or fiberglass, once exposed to sun or rain, the final coat may wind up cracking or peeling. Garage Door Paint Steps

1.       Door Clean up

Start by rinsing off the doors. A diluted sugar soap solution or simply warm soapy water should do the job make sure that every product is rinsed well before the doors are left to dry thoroughly.

2.       Removing Furniture

Simply remove the door handles, brackets and hinges or cover them with masking tape.

3.       Sand Paper and Preparation

Use sandpapers on the gate. You need a wire brush if the garage doors are flaky. A medium grade sandpaper should do the job for the timber doors. Make sure that there is no more flaky material at the door, and clean it again.

4.       Door Primer

If you are not using any product that work as a primer, you should use a door primer separately. A broad paintbrush (between 3 in and 5 in) is a wise option for this job-using a roller it is difficult to reach in between panels. Let dry have tested for any paint runs absolutely first.

5.       Door Painting

Paint the garage doors using a wide-tooth brush, you can use a smaller one for the door edges. In the case of ‘up and over' designs, removing the doors for painting should not be necessary. Paint from up to bottom if it is a vertical panel door. Two coats are normally needed-allowing the coats to dry thoroughly.

6.       Dry the Paint

Let the paint dry for 12 hours before using it.

7.       Clean It

Clean the paintbrushes using recommended solvent.
